Abstract

A new, compact drilling tool makes it possible to drill long deflected boreholes in hard rock at low cost, even at a depth of hundreds of meters. This allows geological resources such as geothermal energy to be tapped more efficiently. Fraunhofer has now successfully tested the “Micro Turbine Drilling (MTD)” process at the Bedretto Underground Laboratory in Switzerland.
