MTD® – Improved Hydraulic Connectivity Between Borehole and Reservoir Rock Through Micro Sidetracks

Geothermische Energie, No. 111, p. 8-9, June 2025.

Abstract

Micro Turbine drilling – MTD® is a new drilling technology developed by Fraunhofer. It can improve the hydraulic connectivity between the borehole and the surrounding geology. Among other industries, it is particularly suitable for geothermal applications. With MTD®, small-diameter boreholes, known as micro sidetracks, can be drilled in any direction from the main borehole. The MTD® operation can be carried out cost-effectively without the use of a drilling rig and can be applied in both open and cased boreholes.
